At 18 years old Clare Strange broke her back in horse riding
accident and was told she would never be able to walk again.
She had always been a keen sportsperson representing her county
at hockey, her school in the National Indoor Championships but had
never tried her hand at basketball. However this or her injury
didn't stop her from playing sport and she was introduced to
wheelchair basketball during rehab from her accident.
Only one year later Clare made her debut for Great Britain at
the World Championships in Sydney and has been a core member in the
GB women's team ever since representing them at the Paralympic
Games in Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.
In September 2004, Clare moved to Italy to play professionally
in the Italian League for one of Europe's toughest clubs -
Sardinian club, Sassari. She became one of the first British women
to play basketball overseas.
Clare has won 5 European Bronze medals, and was part of the team
that finished 6th in the World Championships in 2010,
their highest ever placing.
With her grandfather born and bred in Newport, Clare is very
proud of her Welsh roots.
