Elite Cymru
Elite Cymru is aimed at providing the most highly promising
athletes in non Olympic and paralympic sports with the support they
need to achieve their potential.
Support provided
Elite Cymru members are provided with:-
1% difference that could bring success
Athletes are required to meet minimum agreed performance
standards which are determined by both Sport Wales and the National
Governing Body.
To receive continued support on the scheme Elite Cymru members
must be able to prove to both Sport Wales and their governing body
that they are continuing to make progress.
The support services on offer give Elite Cymru athletes the best
possible chance of achieving their goals and help to make the 1%
difference that could bring success.
A Competitor Centred Approach
The Elite Cymru scheme adopts a competitor centred approach to
excellence.
Service delivery is based on the premise that the competitor
needs to operate in an environment where support is co-ordinated
and not delivered in an ad-hoc, fragmented approach.
The competitor is central to the process, while systems and
support services have to be adaptable and accessible to assist the
competitor to fulfil his/her potential.
Are you eligible for Elite Cymru support?
Financial support is provided for travelling costs,
accommodation, coaching, equipment and other costs directly
associated with the competition and training programme. The amount
of financial support received varies depending on personal
circumstances and the cost of competition and training
programmes.
Who is eligible?
A key performance indicator (KPI) for ourselves and
national governing bodies of non-Olympic/non-Paralympic sports in
Wales is the number of athletes succeeding at world, European and
Commonwealth levels.
We can provide financial support to athletes identified by
Welsh NGBs as having the potential to meet these standards who have
met/exceeded the agreed minimum performance criteria set by the
individual NGB.
How to Apply?
Competitors should contact either
their governing body or the Élite Cymru unit on (029) 2033 8237 to
enquire whether they meet the agreed minimum performance
standards.
Do you compete in an Olympic or Paraylmpic sport?
UK Sport is fully responsible for funding identified elite
athletes in Olympic and Paralympic sports. Athletes in
Olympic/Paralympic sports are funded and supported by UK Sport and
UK Governing Bodies. However, Sport Wales still regards these
Welsh athletes as being part of the Elite Cymru ethos and
system.
