Calls for Action

Sport Wales Calls4Action

How to apply for investment in your project

Apply by 20th June 2014

So you think you can bring a bold new approach to giving more people the opportunity to take part in sport?

Well, you're in the right place, so read on……

Advert 2014

We believe that everyone in Wales should enjoy the positive benefits that regular participation in sport brings, regardless of background and circumstances.

2014 is seen as an unmissable opportunity to inspire our nation to take part in more sport and lead a more active and healthy lifestyle.

To mark Commonwealth Games year, Sport Wales has launched £3m of investment into community sport across Wales to tackle known gaps in participation amongst women and girls, the BME community, disabled people and those living in poorer parts of the country.

£1.5million of National Lottery funding available through the Calls4Action project will be invested into addressing the barriers currently preventing young women and girls from participating in sport.  A further £1.5million will look to tackle inequalities around areas of poverty, disability and BME communities.

What are we looking for?

You could share the £3m we're looking to invest in Wales.

We want bold, new approaches.  We've made our application process easier and you don't necessarily need to be a sporting expert because we want to provide assistance to individuals and organisations bringing fresh ideas and ways of getting more people involved in sport.

Calls4Action investment is open to those who can generate positive action to address the issues of inequality within sport and give everyone the chance to enjoy the benefits of sport.

Who can apply?

We want this to be an investment that encourages new thinking and partnerships to be developed.

We would consider proposals from any organisation that can deliver a project that will have a positive impact on our target groups.

There will need to be a lead organisation for each application.  Schools cannot be a lead organisation, however they can be a partner in a project.   Lead organisations will have to demonstrate that:

  • they hold a bank account;
  • they comply with our normal terms and conditions and financial regulations;
  • sound governance procedures are in place to ensure the sustainability and financial credibility of the project in the long term.

What will we invest in?

'Positive Action' is the key

Investment will be given to support those elements deemed necessary to deliver a successful and significant project. This can include capital (facilities and infrastructure) and/or revenue (setup, staffing or equipment) costs.

The good news is we don't need all these figures in the first instance, but we want your ideas (see more information below)

In order to stimulate ideas and encourage innovation, we have chosen not to provide an exhaustive list of what can or cannot be funded. The priority is to understand what projects aim to deliver. There will be some basic principles which apply to our existing investment programmes,  but "what can be funded?" will largely depend on "what can be delivered?" and how this will create a long term lasting impact.

How much can I apply for?

The minimum grant request should be £25,000 and there is no maximum award level.

Don't be put off if your project needs less than £25,000. We have other grants and funding streams and you can find more information on our funding pages.

The aim is that any project will become self-sustainable by the end of the funding period.

We would also expect to see that Calls4Action funding is not the only investment made into the project, which we hope will add to the drive of encouraging collaboration and partnership working.

What do I do next?

We want your ideas by 20th June 2014

All potential applicants must first contact Sport Wales to request an 'Outline Proposal Form'.  This can be done via telephone 02920 338246 or e-mail: This way we can give you some advice and talk you through what we're looking for.

The Outline Proposal Form will ask some basic questions and give you the chance to include a short summary of your idea.

All outline proposals must be received by Sport Wales by 20th June 2014.

Those applications that we believe best meet the criteria and our priorities will be invited to draw up a more detailed application for further consideration.

Remember, we are here to help.
